What it is and what sets it apart: Aftertaste is residual flavour via retronasal smell. Distinct from first aroma and from body: it judges what remains and whether it is clean, sweet or defective.
How it’s perceived or evaluated: After swallowing, wait 10–30 s and note. On SCA forms, Aftertaste is scored. Compare length and cleanliness across cups.
Flavours, benefits or impact: A sweet, clean finish lifts score and pleasure. Negative: dry bitter, phenolic or lingering sour.
Technical notes: Extraction and roast shape the finish. At the bar, shot time changes aftertaste as much as dose.
Common mistakes: Do not judge only the first sip. Do not call dirty long persistence “complexity”.
