Cowboy coffee

Also known as cowboy coffee · café de campamento · camp coffee · open pot coffee

Cowboy coffee: olla / hervidor sobre fuego

Coffee steeps or boils in a pot. No paper: solids settle by resting, chilling or a splash of cold water.

High body and rustic cup; more sediment than press or filter. Handy outdoors or as a historical reference.

Use coarse grind and watch time. In Cafesito log it as Manual/other and compare with a press.

Overboiling turns bitter; pouring too soon fills the cup with grounds.

How to use

Ratios, gear and steps to brew it.

Ratios and parameters

  • Dose 30 g
  • Water 500 ml
  • Ratio 1:15–1:17
  • Grind Coarse
  • Temperature Just off boil / brief boil
  • Time 3–5 min + settle

What you need

  • Pot or kettle
  • Heat source
  • Spoon
  • Cups

Brewing steps

  1. Heat water; add coarse coffee.

  2. Stir; hold 3–5 min without a rolling boil (or a very brief boil).

  3. Optional: splash of cold water to settle grounds.

  4. Wait 1–2 min; decant carefully.

Tips

  • Long boiling turns bitter. Pouring too soon = grounds in the cup.
  • For less sediment at home, use a press or filter.
