Bar lungo

Also known as lungo · espresso largo

What it is and what sets it apart: Not an americano (which adds water). Higher g out at the same dose.

At the bar: Set ratio (e.g. 1:2.5–1:3) → dial-in (often coarser) → label tickets clearly.

Impact on the drink: Impact: longer, softer cup; excess = dilution and overextraction bitterness.

Technical notes: Don’t just stretch a 1:2 shot without grind changes.

Common mistakes: Confusing lungo with americano. Huge improvised yield. Ignoring woody/bitter notes.

How to use

Work from a logged recipe, scale and a clean station.

Steps

  1. Prep equipment and confirm the target recipe.

  2. Perform Bar lungo changing only one variable.

  3. Taste, clean and log the adjustment.

Tips

  • Prioritise hygiene and consistency over speed.
